Common Uses: This medicine is an aromatase inhibitor used to treat breast cancer in women after menopause.
ARIMIDEX is approved for adjuvant treatment (treatment following surgery with or without radiation) of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer.
Approval was based on study results from patients taking ARIMIDEX as treatment for early breast cancer. At the time of analysis, half of the patients had been treated for 2 ½ years or more and half had been treated for less than 2 ½ years.
In this ongoing study, further follow-up of patients will be required to determine long-term results, including side effects and survival.
ARIMIDEX is also indicated for first-line treatment (first hormonal treatment in advanced breast cancer) for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or hormone receptor-unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
ARIMIDEX is also indicated for treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression following tamoxifen therapy. Patients with estrogen receptor-negative disease and patients who did not respond to previous tamoxifen
therapy rarely responded to ARIMIDEX.
Prescription ARIMIDEX is only for postmenopausal women. ARIMIDEX should not be taken if you are pregnant because it may harm your unborn child.
